Well, everybody… they finally did it. The Scary Movie franchise is coming back to make fun of our favorite horror films again.
Small History
In case you missed it, the Scary Movie franchise is the epitome of horror parody. The first installment went straight for Scream, a film that already poked fun of horror tropes with its clumsy Ghostface killer.
The films, though infested with 2000s crudeness, attack almost every hit horror movie you can think of: from Scream, House on a Haunted Hill, The Ring, Saw, The Grudge, and Paranormal Activity.
While some of the jokes don’t land as well today, the franchise has successfully grounded itself as an important part of horror pop culture. I can’t tell you how many people have told me they can’t even watch The Ring anymore without thinking, “Cindy! The TV’s leaking!”
The Announcement
So, it’s no surprise that the Wayans brothers recently announced they were reviving the once dormant series.
Marlon Wayans shared on his official Instagram account: “WE’RE BACK!!! After nearly 20 years, the Wayans brothers are finally going to give the fans what they’ve been asking for… a return to
the SCARY MOVIE franchise!”
What Now?
As far what’s next in the series? I have no idea what they’re going to do with this movie. There’s so many directions this thing could take, I’m honestly pumped to watch it all unfold.
Part of me wonders what sort of parodies we are going to see. Will Blumhouse films become their next target? Will MEGAN be dancing with a Wayans bro? Considering Blumhouse’s reputation, I wouldn’t be shocked to see the film focus on the infamous production company.
On the other hand, maybe we’ll see some niche horror. Will analog horror giants like Local58 or Mandela Catalogue make an appearance? Or maybe we will see internet horror like Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared play out. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Five Nights at Freddy’s in there either.
Honestly, anything is up for debate right now.
The last Scary Movie came out in 2013, and there’s been a lot of amazing horror media that has come out since then. I’m definitely excited to see what they pick and choose to bring to the table.
Plus, I think it’s great to bring something like Scary Movie back. We live in weird and sometimes scary times, and honestly, we all just need a laugh to get through.
Are you excited for the new Scary Movie? What do you think they’ll be parodying for the upcoming installment?
P.S. Keeping it short this week! I’m preparing an awesome essay to celebrate A Nightmare on Elm Street next week… stay tuned!
Also, rest in peace to Tony Todd. We lost a horror icon.
