The Disneyland Killer: A Park of Vague Atrocities
Liminal Land: Where All Your Nightmares Come True.
The 70s. Walt Disney World just opened, Disneyland is booming. If you were to go on a family vacation, chances are you were picking between one of them. That is, until Liminal Land opened its doors in New Mexico. Dubbed the “Disneyland Killer,” Liminal Land was meant to compete with the Disney brand in innovative ride technology and entertainment. It was certainly successful, bringing thousands of people in each year of its operation.
But it did eventually close.
There’s a reason you never hear about it anymore. Have you ever seen a theme park history video about Liminal Land? About one of the iconic rides like the Laugh Track? No. Never.
Liminal Land closed. Disneyland thrived. Now Liminal Land is forgotten.
So, did I get you? Reel you in, maybe? I hope the start of my alternative history essay did the job—that means I’ll get an A in class! Or a high B, I guess, but I think it’s worthy of an A.
Anyway… you guessed right: Liminal Land is a new horror project! It was created by Nexpo and Nick Crowley of YouTube fame, and I have to say, it’s beautifully executed so far.
It’s interesting, visually appealing, and overall just fun to piece together. It’s a horror series that not only includes video content, but an entire website full of stuff to explore.
The Basics of Liminal Land
As mentioned earlier, Liminal Land was created to be the “Disneyland Killer.” In universe, it was created by the CHARON Corporation, who wanted to push what a theme park could be. Liminal Land offered a theme park, a waterpark, and an on-site resort for guests to enjoy.
The issue is that people began to go missing within the area, with police investigating the park under strange circumstances.
Exploring the Parks
The website for this project features pretty much everything you need to learn everything about Liminal Land (other than a reason why people are missing). It provides an about page, which explains the history surrounding the park. It also provides interesting insight surrounding the closure:
Unfortunately, on May 20th, of 1989, Liminal Land's day of reckoning had come. That night, the park was rapidly and indefinitely shut down, with no concrete reason ever being given. The remains of those present on that fateful night are rumored to remain exactly where they were last seen, although nobody really knows for sure.
Yeah, that’s totally not creepy or suspicious at all.
But if you think Liminal Land’s website only has some text to make you scratch your head and think, then I have some real unfortunate news for you; they have terrifying images to keep you up at night too!
The gallery provides images upon images to solve the morbid curiosity you had for the park. Aren’t they just lovely? Look how much fun everyone is having.
But wait, there’s more! They even have a list of the attractions that used to be there! There’s even a page for the resort area, which is said to have been underground. HOME was so popular that people even started to buy their own units to live there.
I mean, who wouldn’t want to live in something like this, amirite?
The Archives
Now this is the meat and potatoes.
The most interesting part of this website, besides the web page blocked by a password, is the archive. The archive provides information into the investigation into Liminal Land.
Although the images are creepy as hell, I personally think the archive is what truly gets under your skin. You’re put into the position to piece together the story of the theme park, rather it be through old police reports or TV broadcasts.
And let’s just say, everything in the archive is scary good. The level of detail in this project is absolutely insane. Nexpo and Nick Crowley outdid themselves, but out of everyone, I would expect it from these two! They pump out amazing content on YouTube all the time, so it was a no-brainer that they would create such an interesting series like Liminal Land.
Go Explore
Now, I haven’t gone into detail about much of anything here. I wanted to just give you a TASTE—you need to go look at everything else yourself.
Liminal Land is an ongoing series, so there’s more to discover within the universe. Plus, they definitely deserve the support. You can even buy merch for Liminal Land if you end up really loving it!
But… you can get way more immersed if you investigate the mysteries of Liminal Land yourself. So, go on: LOSE YOURSELF IN LIMINAL LAND.
